Contract packing quote guide

What shapes a packing quote?

A practical guide to work content, materials, quantities, setup, approvals and deadlines—without pretending every project has the same unit price.

The short answer

Cost follows
the real work.

Contract packing cost depends on the product, operations, materials, quantity, variants, checks, setup, handling, schedule and supply-chain handover.

A meaningful quote needs more than a unit count. Two 10,000-unit projects can require very different labour and preparation if one has a single action and the other has multiple components, label versions and inspection steps.

Why contract packing prices vary

A contract packing quote combines direct work with the preparation and controls needed to complete that work reliably. Opening stock, confirming materials, setting up the task, briefing the run, handling variants, checking output and preparing finished goods can all contribute.

That is why a generic price per unit is rarely useful before the process is understood. A packer may need photographs, samples, dimensions or an approved build before deciding whether the route is practical and how time should be estimated.

Volume matters, but it is not the only factor

Higher volume can spread setup across more units, but repetitive complexity still consumes time. A small job with a clear single step may be easier to plan than a larger job with many artwork versions, components or uncertain materials.

Urgency can change the route

A short-notice job must fit around product review, approvals, material and stock arrival, production capacity and handover. Give the real business deadline early so feasibility is assessed before anybody assumes the work can be expedited.

Eight quote factors

Information that changes
the commercial picture.

Not every factor applies to every job, but missing details can prevent an accurate review.

01 · Work content

Number of operations

Each label, insert, fold, assembly, removal, inspection or packing step adds handling and time.

02 · Product

Format and condition

Dimensions, weight, fragility, current pack condition and specialist handling needs affect the possible method.

03 · Volume

Quantity and frequency

Total units, batch sizes, repeat frequency and variant split shape setup and production planning.

04 · Components

Materials and supply

Availability, identification, print versions, wastage assumptions and supply responsibility all matter.

05 · Standard

Approvals and checks

Approved samples, artwork, tolerances, inspection requirements and exception handling must be understood.

06 · Preparation

Setup and instructions

A new or variable job may require more preparation than a stable repeat run with an agreed process.

07 · Timing

Lead time and urgency

Stock arrival, approvals, production availability and the true deadline shape whether the schedule is workable.

08 · Handover

Logistics and finished pack

Inbound delivery, storage expectations, outer cases, pallet or carton identification and collection affect scope.

Minimum order questions

Ask about the practical
minimum for your job.

There is no universal minimum order quantity that fits every packing process. Setup and review take time even when the unit count is small.

  • Describe the full expected quantity
  • State whether the requirement may repeat
  • Separate versions and batch sizes
  • Explain any launch or deadline dependency
  • Ask whether a sample or trial is needed

Costs & lead-time FAQs

Commercial questions need project details.

Stockholm Ltd can review a quote only after the requirement is sufficiently clear.

How much does contract packing cost?

Contract packing does not have one reliable unit price because cost depends on the product, number and duration of operations, materials, quantity, variants, checks, setup, handling, timing and inbound or outbound requirements.

Do contract packers have a minimum order quantity?

The practical minimum varies by project. Setup, instructions, approvals and line preparation take time even for a small quantity, so the work content and total project value matter alongside unit volume.

How long does contract packing take?

Lead time depends on project review, material availability, approved artwork or samples, stock arrival, quantity, production capacity, required checks and the final handover. State the real deadline in the first enquiry.

What should I send for a quote?

Send the incoming product details, each required operation, quantity and variants, materials, approved finished standard, checks, stock availability, deadline and inbound and outbound plan.
